Donato Martinez has a captivating voice. His poetry is like music, it lives and breathes within the pages of Touch The Sky. Every poem brought forth so much emotion within me, the words painted the imagery of his childhood and his home so well. I could feel the anger, the pain, the joy, and the love – it is powerfully conveyed here.
This book comes at a time where immigrants are often viewed with suspicion. It provides the perspective of one and his experiences settling in to a new country while determined to hold onto the culture of the one he left behind. The frustration in balancing two cultures and two languages is powerful and ripples through the pages.
The variety of poetry within the pages gives a rhythm and a tone for each piece. There are rhymes, there are free-verse, and everything in between. It demonstrates the different emotions and subjects covered, and the nuances and variety of them all. The use of both English and Spanish portrays both identities Martinez shoulders, and flow smoothly together. I will be thinking about this book for a long time, it is a masterpiece.
